The Spotted Horse is a 250 year old traditional pub with mock Tudor detailing to the facade, it is located within a conservation area on Putney High Street. The interior was tired and dated and in much need of a new lease of life. The client also highlighted the opportunity to create a roof terrace bar to attract more drinkers and private functions as well as all year round al fresco drinking.
The concept derived from the client’s desire to update the interior to create a destination pub, encouraging new customers inside and to offer something extraordinary compared to the rest of the high street. We considered the need for flexible dining throughout the bar and a more formal dining area to the rear of the pub using a mix of furniture styles and heights to suggest drinking and dining is acceptable throughout.
The traditional style furnishings adorned with bold fabrics with a verdant colour scheme creates a wonderment as you journey through the pub; from the informal bar with comfy armchairs and sharing tables into the central snug with plush, sophisticated furnishings. Indoor planting and foliage throughout hints to the botanical hidden gem of the aptly named new gin bar ‘The Juniper Terrace’ waiting to be discovered upstairs on the roof terrace.
Warm exposed original timbers, open fireplaces and exposed brickwork are reminders of the history of the pub, softened with rich plush velvet fabrics and large scale floral patterns. Dark heritage paint colours were used to create a warm and relaxed setting with soft amber lighting.
The roof terrace was a completely new creation formed from a section of roof and an existing bathroom, using the existing sash windows to form the internal bar servery access. A glazed pergola structure with heaters and festoon lighting maximises the use of space through the colder months.
Named the ‘Juniper Terrace’ the bright coloured furniture and bespoke mural decoration of tropical planting and exotic creatures brought to life with planting and garden accessories awaits. Highlights of strong geometric fabrics provide a cool Miami style terrace.
